San Diego County: Innovation, Defense, Tourism & a Diverse Regional Economy

San Diego is much more than one of California’s largest tourism destinations. The region is a major center for military and defense, biotechnology and life sciences, healthcare, software and technology, cybersecurity, aerospace, telecommunications, scientific research, and advanced manufacturing.

Its large military and defense presence also supports thousands of employees working for government agencies, defense contractors, engineering companies, shipbuilding and repair operations, manufacturers, construction companies, and other businesses serving the defense industry.

At the same time, San Diego’s beaches, hotels, restaurants, attractions, convention business, and entertainment industry support a substantial hospitality and tourism workforce. Other major sources of employment include healthcare, education, construction, retail, transportation and logistics, international trade, property services, finance, professional services, and thousands of small businesses throughout the county.

From scientists, engineers, healthcare professionals, and defense-industry employees to hotel workers, restaurant employees, construction workers, drivers, technicians, retail employees, and office staff, California employment laws protect workers throughout San Diego County.
